The Purple Heart

Rachel Rossi, Staffer

The Purple Heart Medal is awarded to members of the armed forces of the United States who are wounded and or killed in war. Sometimes the Purple Heart is given to the next of kin if their loved one was killed in action or died of wounds received in action. There are only 3 soldiers that are known to have received the original honor badge. For some not so clear reason the medal was not awarded again. It was not until October 1927 after World War I.

On February 22, 1932 — the 200th anniversary of George Washington’s birthday. The Purple Heart was established by General George Washington at Newburgh, August 7, 1782, during the War of the Revolution.

In our district we have four teachers that have served in the military. Two of the four teachers are the Pine Grove JROTC teachers. The first teacher is Lieutenant Colonel Michael Stefanchik and Sergeant First Class Leroy Bates. Lieutenant Colonel Stefanchik says “ It was an honor to serve my country.” He served for 28 years in the United States Army. The other two teachers are Mr. Herring and Mr. Salen. In my interview with Mr. Herring he says he is still actively in the United States Army.
