Funeral by Lil Wayne was released on January 31, 2020. The album was mostly a surprise, a contrast to Wayne’s previous album, Tha Carter V which was delayed time and time again and was highly reviewed.  Wayne has previously broken new ground with his new releases. Tha Carter III which opened new doors for poprap, so a new release was expected but Funeral did not have a lot of build up.

The album is not good. It is a sharp downturn from Tha Carter V and instead of being bad, it’s just  mediocre. The album is 24 tracks, 1 hour and 16 minutes long, and extremely bloated. It’s full of duds, forgettable moments, and tracks that are honestly pretty unbearable. Wayne lacks his usual wit and flow which is what previously made him such a polarizing figure in the rap game. The synthesizers sound cheap, Wayne phones in his vocals, the auto tune sounds out of place, and the beats are boring.

The worst track in my opinion is “I Do It (ft. Big Sean, Lil Baby)” which is a total embodiment of the album. So painfully average and just such a contrast from Tha Carter V. Big Sean and Lil Baby add no substance to the track and just serve to bring it down. The lyrics are boring and have no real meaning or wit, a staple of Wayne.

It’s an album with no focus. It’s over an hour long and very little is said in all 24 tracks. Directionless and aimless, the album falls very short of many people’s expectations.
