The Way Back is a sports/drama film released on March 6, 2020. The movie stars Ben Affleck as the main character, who plays the role of Jack Cunningham. The Way Back currently has 85% score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 4.3 star audience rating.

The movie is about Jack Cunningham, who works construction during the day and spends his nights in the bar getting drunk. It wasn’t always this way though, back in high school Jack had his life set. He was the best basketball player of his time and had offers from multiple colleges, but Jack decided he didn’t want to go to college. Jack’s legacy was never forgotten at his high school, especially with all his banners and achievements hanging up on the gym’s walls. Years later, he gets an opportunity to be the head coach of a horrific basketball team at his alma mater. Jack is surprised with the offer and accepts the job gratefully. As he coaches more and more, his team starts to come together and win as a team. Jack’s team makes it to the state finals, but gets fired from his job. He came to practice late and drunk. Will the team win the state finals without their head coach or will they lose?

Honestly, I think The Way Back was a good movie but not a great movie. I would give this movie a 3 out of 5 stars because for me as a viewer 80% of this movie felt like a wandering meaningless journey from one theme to another. If you didn’t completely follow the movie from the beginning to the end, you wouldn’t understand the ending. The movie did have a powerful meaning behind it, but some people might not have understood the meaning, considering Jack Cunningham’s journey. I would probably not recommend this to a friend just because of the wandering, meaningless themes.
