Employment: Coal Mine Rock Picking

Christopher Bender, Staffer

Up in the Molly’s Town Mountains there’s a coal company called Little Buck Coal Co. The company mines, pick rock and sell anthracite coal.    Picking rock is necessary to make sure that the person buying the coal is getting coal and not rock not cannot be used as fuel. The owner, Larry Bender, states, “If we sold coal with lots of rock in it, we would lose customers.”  My job, is to pick the rock and to get the big chunks of rock out of the coal pile. I am to make sure that the people buying it are buying coal.

When picking rock you’ve got to make sure you can get as much as possible out, there will always be a piece or two of rock in it but that is to be expected. When I pick rock, my responsibilities are waiting for the cart of coal to come up and dump the mineral, then to pick as much rock as possible out of the pile of coal, and repeat the process over and over.

These are some of the duties and responsibilities of picking rock. It’s an easy job unless you make it hard. Overall, it is very necessary job for helping families especially in this area.
