A  line of fire trucks stretch around the back of Pine Grove Area Elementary School as they hold their Annual Fire Prevention Day. The day has continuously run for almost three decades, is a day full of activities to teach the students about fire prevention and safety and what to do in the event of a fire. Local volunteer fire companies from around the Pine Grove Area all come to participate and teach the students about fire safety.

They teach the students about different things to do in an emergency situation like calling 9-1-1 and getting out of the house to safety as well as making a meeting point for their family to go to after they evacuate. They also teach fire prevention techniques and how to recognize a fire hazard and tell an adult about it. They teach most of these things in the North End Fire Company’s Fire prevention trailer. The trailer comes around once every two years and is a valuable tool North End uses to help educate students.

The man in charge is Lee Strubhar who has been a firefighter for the past 30 years and in charge of coordinating the event for the past 28 years. He helps to coordinate the fire safety day not only with Pine Grove Area but also at local daycares. He enjoys having the opportunity to teach the kids about fire safety and prevention and hopes that it will help them in the event of an emergency in the future. In addition to Strubhar,  Sandy Burns, Elementary Principal, plays a large part in the whole day.

“October is National Fire Prevention month and we were pleased that our local fire department reached out to our school and wanted to come spend the day with us.  The firemen and women were just as excited as our students to talk about fire prevention and safety. This morning while students filled our halls, I overheard their excitement about meeting a ‘real fireman’. Students were engaged and intrigued about fire safety and were extremely excited about seeing the fire truck and have the firefighters eat lunch with them.  It was an exciting, educational day for all of our students and we are extremely grateful for our local fire department and all that they do.”
