Why is Cheerleading a Sport

Mason Kroh, Staffer

Cheerleading is considered a sport by every cheerleader you ask. It meets many requirements that people say sports must have. It has physical activity, such as when they do their stunts. There are cheer competitions all across America, showing the competitive side of it. The sport is at all levels, high school, collegiate and professional.

Varsity cheer captain Tessa Olt says, “It’s not as easy as it looks we actually have to condition and practice a lot, you can’t just go out in front of crowds on Friday nights and do the stunts, you actually need practice.” Junior Shea Morgan said, “At the homecoming pep rally I went up in a build and it isn’t as easy as I thought. It takes great strength, coordination, and athletic ability lifting people up and being flexible.” Cheerleading is a tough sport, it takes great skills that you can’t just develop overnight. Anyone who does some of the stuff they do would tell you it is definitely a sport.
