New Season (Narcos: Mexico) Review

Derek Hoffman, Staffer

Narcos is a Netflix original based on drug lords in the 80’s. The show, over multiple seasons, showcased both the Columbian cocaine empire and now in a new season, the Marijuana empire in Mexico. There is always something going on and something to think about in this show. Overall, I really enjoyed these seasons as the creators really managed to make the drug trade really interesting to watch.

The first three seasons of Narcos focus on the Columbian cocaine industry. The first two being centered on Pablo Escobar’s cocaine empire with the Medellin Cartel. The third season focused on Escobar’s rivals in the Cali Cartel, both Cartels though, still Columbian. After the show dealt with the killing of Escobar and the rest of the Cali Cartel, I wasn’t sure where they would go next with the show.

Then, I saw the trailer for the new season and saw they were taking it to Mexico. At first I wasn’t sure how to feel about this because the whole focus on the show was the Columbian cocaine trade and Pablo Escobar’s empire. However, after giving it some thought I figured it might be interesting, and considering that I was a fan of the show, I was obviously going to watch it. The new season focuses around Miguel Angel Felix Gallardo and the Marijuana empire he creates in Mexico. He starts out as a Mexican state policeman with a small greenhouse in his backyard where him and his friend Rafa grow and experiment with strains of Marijuana. Then he starts to go up the ranks which is where it starts to get interesting.

Gallardo grows a very strong empire in Mexico with his partner Rafa who made a strain of marijuana that increased yield. Eventually, he decides to fly down to Columbia to try and get into the cocaine industry. While here, the characters from the previous seasons are reintroduced when he meets when the head of the Cali Cartel, as well as with meeting with Pablo Escobar. Throughout the season Gallardo was almost caught on multiple occasions however evaded the authorities for the longest time. In conclusion, Narcos: Mexico is a great addition to the series and is definitely worth the watch.
