Walmart and Target are often compared to each other and have had an ongoing rival since the time they opened. In 1962, the first Walmart was opened by Sam Walton in Rogers, Arkansas. Also in 1962, Dayton Company opened its first Target store in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In terms of market capitalization, Walmart’s $319.67 billion is more than 6.5 times larger than Target’s $44.41 billion, as of early July 2019.

According to Britannica.com,  Walmart is an American multinational retail corporation that operates a chain of hypermarkets, discount department stores, and grocery stores headquartered in Bentonville, Arkansas. With Walmart, you can purchase your groceries online or do in-store pick up, you can also shop in-store for other items.  Also from Britannica.com, Target is a general merchandise retailer selling products through its stores and digital channels. Target is headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota, its hometown since the first Target store opened in 1962 under The Dayton Company. Also with Target you can purchase your groceries online or do in-store pick up and shop in-store like Walmart.

In my personal preference, I would choose Walmart over Target. I think Walmart is generally cheaper than Target and Walmart is closer to home. The closest Walmart to me is around 30 minutes away, while the closest Target is around 45 minutes away. The products between the stores are similar, but Walmart’s products are less expensive. Walmart is the better choice over Target.
