With an early start to spring, golf also had an early start. Personally, I’m not very good at the sport but it is still fun. With this hybrid schedule, which is unfortunately coming to an end, I’ve been getting out during the week, which is nice. One thing people don’t realize about golf is the exercise one gets just in 18 holes. At the course I go to, if I play all 18 holes, I have to walk up to 5 miles and carry a golf bag with all my clubs in it. It’s also just another way to get outside and do something, and in the late summer of 2020, with a lot of Covid-19 restrictions in place, there was nothing better to do.
Golf is also an easy sport to get involved in. You don’t have to be on a team to play, unlike many other sports. Plus, it’s not the most expensive sport either. One can get started for $300-$400 if you buy everything brand new, but you can easily find golf clubs at yard sales for under $50 if you are on a budget. Additionally, it only costs up to $20 at some courses to play all 18 holes, which could get expensive if you play a lot. If you play very often, you may consider a yearly membership. They usually cost around $500 per year for smaller, beginner courses.
However there are some downsides to golf as well. You might end up falling for some gimmicky product commercial and pay a lot of money for something that doesn’t really help you play. Also, if you are a bad shot, like me, you might have to spend a lot of money on balls, because you hit all of them in the water hazard or in the woods. With all this being said, I do believe golf is one of the best sports anyone can play. It’s easy and fun to play, and you get a lot of exercise while doing it.
