This year’s boys baseball team is in for a very interesting ride, after graduating 3 starting seniors: Josh Leininger, Donovan Copland, and Hunter Leghart. Shea Morgan also graduated last year; however, Morgan’s season was cut short due to an injury very early in the season.

Leininger was a key starting pitcher for the Cardinals, with a very powerful arm. When he wasn’t on the mound he was in the outfield tracking down fly balls. Copland was a solid first basemen, and Leghart was another good outfielder for the Cards.

Despite the four senior loss from the 2021 Season, this year’s Seniors are looking forward to stepping up and filling the spots left behind by those who graduated. Hunter Deichert and Gavin Umbenhauer will take an even further step up in the pitching rotation than they already have, both being able to start and close out games. They won’t be alone either, with star shortstop Ethan Hannevig being able to stretch the bullpen even further, along with Logan Zimmerman who can do the same. Zimmerman can also play at first base.

Starting catcher Daniel Zimmerman, junior, said, “We have a lot of good players this year, I think we’ll go far as opposed to last year.” After a 9-11 season plagued with COVID-19 issues, The Cardinals believe they have more than enough talent on the roster to make a playoff push. Ethan Hannevig had this to say about his upcoming season, “Team looks good. We are ready to play. We’ve all been playing together for years so there is a lot of chemistry. I’m excited for this season.” Brandon Unger, junior, predicted that the team would go 14-6.
