Student Choreographs the Musical

Reese Lutz, senior, watches as Alexa Ziegler, senior, and Alexa Brown, senior, dance through the duet section of the tap dance.

“When I am coming up with choreography I like to first watch someone else take on the dance. After that I sit down and adjust it. I also like to start with one move I really like and create something around that, something that flows well and makes sense to the people dancing as well,” said Alexa Ziegler, senior, Cardinal Spotlight Theater choreographer.

Ziegler has choreographed for the Cardinal Spotlight Theater for the last three years. She is currently creating choreography for Pine Grove Area’s version of Newsies, which will be shown from March 17th through March 19th.

Her dance experience from dancing in shows such as the Nutcracker for the Schuylkill Ballet Theater. She is a student Vivan’s Dance Studio in Schuylkill Haven.

“I have been dancing since I was very young so I thought that choreographing the musical would be a fun challenge to add to my dance background,” said Ziegler.

Ziegler has a method to make sure that she has beautiful pieces but that they are also learnable for the cast of the musical.

“I think that the most difficult part about choreographing would be the time management. I have to have an idea of how long it is going to take to make a dance and also how many days/ practices it will take to teach. I like choreographing most of the time, some days it can be a little stressful and frustrating when the cast isn’t envisioning the same things as you but I do love teaching, making and watching the dances,” said Ziegler.
