Cardinals Sneak Past Riverside

Owen Hannevig, junior, entering the game against Riverside in the top of the fifth inning with one out. Hannevig got the win for the Cardinals. During his time on the mound he only allowed one hit, while striking out four and walking zero.

Cardinals sneak by Riverside with a 6-5 win. In the first inning, Garrett “Chip” Brandt, senior, was on the mound for the Cardinals. He started off the first batter of the game with a strikeout, but from there it went downhill.

Brandt had a few walks to put people on then Riverside hit a base hit to get two in. Then he pitched a ground ball where the infield made an error and it really messed up the inning. The Cardinals ended up getting out of the inning but they went down 4-0. Riverside led up into the fourth inning when the Cardinals finally got something going when Carson Lengle, sophomore, finally got a run on the board that finally got the Cardinals. Then at the bottom of the fourth the Cardinals fought back and got back into the game 4-3.In the fifth inning Riverside fought back and got another run.

Then at the top of the fifth Riverside got one back but in the bottom of the inning the Cardinals got the run back. In the sixth inning, Owen Hannevig, junior, was on the mound for the Cardinals and shut down Riverside. Then the Cardinals fought back in the bottom of the sixth and tied it up. In the seventh, Hannevig continued with giving no runs up for the Cardinals.

In the bottom of the seventh Lehman got on base with one out then Brandt came up to bat. Brandt had two strikes on him and he hit a line drive over the second baseman’s head which sent Lehman around third with a close play at the plate Lehman sumersalted over the catcher and that run won the game for the Cardinals 6-5.

Hannevig said, “ I knew that they weren’t going to be able to hit me at all and I knew if they gave us the opportunity we were going to finish the game with a win.”

Brandt said , “Coach had the steal sign on and normally you shouldn’t swing but I had to protect the zone because I had two strikes on me so I swung luckily it wasn’t a line out. But it felt great to get the win for the team.
