Mock Car Crash Experience Too Real
On April 27th, Pine Grove Area High School collaborated with local emergencies services in a mock car crash. Rhonda Culbert, advisor of SADD, worked with Lee Strubhar from North End Fire Company to make this possible. Members of SADD volunteered to participate and helped with the event. Culbert tried to have a variety of grades and individuals in different activities represented by her volunteers. Support also came from family members who agreed to be fatalities in the crash. SADD has been doing the mock car crash for years now, while it used to highlight drunk driving, statistics show that distracted driving is increasing so the sceneries vary.
Culbert hopes that the mock car crash has an impact on students. “We hope that it not only addresses such destructive decisions of distracted and reckless driving but to also highlight the amount our first responders do in situations like this,” says Culbert. The goal of the mock car crash is to open the eyes of students to what can happen in this type of situation. Culbert’s main goal is to show students the dangers of reckless and distracted driving. “I also hope that students understand more of how it can affect family, faculty, and first responders when incidents like we simulated occur,” says Culbert. She says that the mock car crash takes a lot of planning but as long as it impacts a few students, then it is worth it.
Taryn Peters, senior, chose to be a part of the mock car crash to show her fellow students the importance of not being distracted while driving. “It definitely impacted the way I see the first responders and the importance of having them in our community. I hope that my fellow students understand the real risk they take by even looking at their phones for a second,” says Peters. Kallie Kreider, junior, also took part in the mock car crash. “I think it is important for every student to recognize what can happen if they are distracted while driving. I believe that some students hear the consequences but not fully understand them, hopefully seeing a visual can help them,” says Kreider. All SADD members involved wanted to help their fellow students show the consequences and effects of distracted driving.
