At the beginning of this normal NFL game, the Dolphins had no idea that this next couple hours would result in NFL history. On Sunday, September 24th at 1:00 the game that made history began. It was between the heavily favored 2-0 Dolphins vs the underdog 0-2 Broncos. The Broncos were seeking their first win of the season while the Dolphins were seeking to keep their undefeated title alive. Nobody would’ve said they expected the outcome that occurred, which would be the 3rd game that a team has ever scored 70 or more points in NFL history.
The game started out normal, with Miami scoring two touchdowns to start, scored by wide receiver Tyreek Hill and running back De’Von Achane, which Denver matched with a touchdown of their own by wide receiver Courtland Sutton. The rookie Achane would then score another touchdown, making the score 21-7. This is when fans started to suspect a big loss for the Broncos, but definitely not a loss by 50 points. The Broncos then scored 2 field goals before halftime whilst the Dolphins scored two more touchdowns, both scored by running back Raheem Mostert. The halftime score was 35-13. After halftime, the Dolphins then scored 4 unanswered touchdowns, 2 by Mostert, 1 by Achane, and 1 by wide receiver Robbie Chosen. This made the score 63-13. Then, the Broncos had a slight spark in a 99 yard kick return touchdown to cut the lead to 43. Shortly after, the final score of the game was a touchdown by Achane, making the score 70-20. Nearing the end of the game, the Dolphins were in position to score a field goal and claim the record for most points scored by one team in an NFL game but Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel stated that, “It would’ve been disrespectful, and that’s not what the sport’s all about. I care about winning, and we did. No need to pull a move like that.” Even though it would have been a bigger piece of history, respect is an extremely important thing to have.
