The importance of having a car in high school is significant. Owning your own car means you can not only drive with freedom, but not having to worry about getting to an event, sport or even school. From experience, my first two years of high school I couldn’t go places I wanted to most of the time. It was tough for me to make plans when the first thing that I thought about was, “How am I going to get a ride?” or, “I’m not going to be able to go, no one’s going to drive out to pick me up.” Getting your very own car is a big responsibility that comes with freedom and joyfulness.
Owning a car in high school means for me that I can get around freely without worry. There is always a possibility that your car breaks down, which could completely ruin your day. Also, having a car means paying for gas all the time. It can take a big chunk out of your budget, like it does mine. These responsibilities that you gather by having a car are barely noticeable compared to your privileges for driving. Going shopping or going to school freely is a major change in your life coming from a kid who never was able to go anywhere without a ride.
Imagine this, you’re invited to an event with some friends. The problem you have is that you live 20 minutes away from your closest friend and they don’t want to drive out and pick you up. Repeat this multiple times till you barely are able to hangout with your friends. This is a common issue with people and I experienced this before I had a car. You have much more stress and anxiety without knowing how you’re going to get places. It is much better to own a car in highschool than not own one. It might just be the most important change in your life.
