On October 5th, students in 12th grade English and Travel Club took a trip to the Pennslvaynia Renaissance Fair. The Renaissance Fair takes place at the Mount Hope Estate and Winery in Lancaster County. Just like its name, the time period of the fair is based on the Renaissance era that took place during the 15th and 16th centuries of England. The fair consists of many activities such as Archery, Eating food, Demonstrations, Dueling, Shopping, Entertainment, and Games. As students arrived at the fair, they noticed that many students from other schools were dressed up as if they were from the era. Walking into the fair, students were greeted by actors exclaiming that it was the Queen’s birthday, and were encouraged to say “Long live the Queen!” if they saw her. The class walked to the popular butterfly bench to take a photo before entering the 15th century. Walking through, there were many small shops with people creating their own clothes, and fur scarves. Students split up into groups and wandered around, looking for things to do. The group I was in decided to take a break from walking and get some food to try.
Keeping in mind that we are in the 15th century, the foods were designed for the time period. Foods such as Wicked Pickles, Cheesesteaks, Macbeth’s Mac N’ Cheese, Grilled Cheese, and the signature Turkey Leg. McKenna Valentine, senior states that the cheesesteaks were a solid 7/10. “It was very delicious and it exceeded my expectations, but it wasn’t anything special.” McKenna and I also got pickles together, with her getting dill, and I got the garlic. In my opinion, the garlic was very good, and probably one of the best foods at the fair. On the other hand, McKenna said the dill pickle was “It was very good, I liked how juicy it was.”
After eating some of the food, we ventured around more to find food stands that had short lines. “Macbeth’s Mac N’ Cheese was very cheesy, and good with salt and pepper added,” said Kallie Kreider, senior. Next, Rayna Zimmerman, senior, and I tried the Grilled Cheese, which turned out overpriced for what we actually got. “For what we got, the cheese could have been more melted, and it was pretty plain, with no flavor.” says Rayna. “Lastly, Ella Fasnacht, senior, and I decided that we had to try the popular Turkey Leg. Throughout the day, we kept seeing a large amount of people carrying the Turkey Legs, so we were very excited to try one. When it came time to try the Turkey Leg, it turned out to be very dry and unflavored. “In my opinion I found the Turkey Leg to be very dry. I think if it had gravy or was freshly made it would have been so much better.” Rayna Zimmerman, senior says.We all had an amazing time at the Renaissance Fair. Overall, our favorite foods were the Wicked Pickles, and the Cheesesteaks.
