In the beginning, Becky (Laysla Oliveira) is pregnant and is in the car with Cal (Avery Whitted) when they hear a kid yelling for help in some tall grass. Cal decides to go in and Becky follows suit, all of a sudden Becky cant find Cal and when she calls for him he sounds very far from her and when she calls out again he is close but now somehow in the opposite direction from where he was before. Becky tells Cal to stop walking and that they will jump over the grass to find each other, when they jump they are very close to each other but when they jump again they are even further than before. It becomes dark and while Cal is walking he runs into Tobin (Will Buie Jr.) who was the kid yelling from before, the kid tells Cal that it is easier to find dead things in the grass because the grass can’t move dead things but he also tells him that he can find Becky (Cal never told Tobin her name) for him and all he has to do is stay close to him. Tobin takes Cal to a rock and tells him that the rock will help him but before Cal touches the rock he hears Becky scream and he goes to try to find her.
Outside of the grass Becky’s boyfriend Travis (Harrison Gilbertson) is looking for Becky when he finds the car Becky was in and goes into the grass after her. Travis runs through the grass and finds her dead so he passes out, when he wakes up he hears Tobin’s voice but Tobin is outside of the grass with his mom, Natalie (Laysla Oliveira) and dad, Ross (Patrick Wilson), and has no idea on who Travis is, they go inside but they get lost until Ross runs into the rock and loses his mind. When it is morning Becky is in the car again with Cal when they hear a kid yelling and they go into the tall grass again. Becky, Travis, Cal, and Tobin meet up and they decide to let Tobin hop on their shoulders and walk to a church which is nearby and it starts to work but then they get chased by Ross. While they are running from Ross, everyone ends up next to the rock and that is when Travis touches the rock.
In my opinion, they made the story really long and really confusing. It is confusing mainly because they are in an infinite loop and we as the viewer can’t really understand what is happening. The movie doesn’t really have any scares besides when Ross sneaks up on people when they are alone and either kills them or breaks their arms and that is because the movie mainly focuses on the lore of the people and what the rock could be (the rock controls the grass and if you touch it you can navigate through the grass but you won’t be able to leave and the rock has been their since forever). Even though the movie is focused on lore they leave what is happening and what the rock is up to you.
Overall, I would give In The Tall Grass a ⅗ stars.
