Mean Girls is an iconic 2004 movie for teenage audiences, due to its relatable portrayal of high school dynamics. Mean Girls captures sharp humor and high school cliques, with the universal theme of trying to fit in. With the movie being twenty years old, they decided to create a new movie targeted towards today’s high school generation. Although the movies are 20 years apart the characters still share the same name, similar traits and the same time of events. The new Mean Girls movie incorporated the broadway version into it. The movie follows the school life of teenager Cady Heron, a previously homeschooled girl from Africa, trying to adapt to a stereotypical school. In the school she meets characters Janice and Damian, which help her find her way around the school. In the process she meets “The Plastics”, which consists of Regina, Gretchen, and Karen. The Plastics are a group of girls known for their constant pink outfits, and for being teen royalty. Janice and Damian encourage Cady to join The Plastics and spy on them. Over several weeks, Cady sabotages Regina, going as far as giving her Kalteen bars to make her gain weight. At the end of all the sabotaging, the high school prepares for prom, in which all the characters are seen making up to each other. The movie overall is a classic teen comedy that all teenagers can relate to.
The newest Mean Girls movie was released to theaters January twelfth. My group of friends decided to go see the movie the day it came out. The movie wasn’t really advertised as a musical, so when the first music scene came on we instantly disliked the movie. The movie portrayed teenagers as social media obsessed, and used a lot of TikTok incorporated videos. The movie failed to actively capture teenagers in today’s world, as many of the characters were wearing tight revealing leather outfits and skirts to school. Overall the movie was a 2/10 because we liked that they still wore pink in the movie.
