The Wylie Tournament is held by Pine Grove Area High School every year. It is a soccer tournament, and the games are the first to count for Districts of the year. Coach Mark Wylie was the former Boys Soccer Coach, along with being the first boy’s soccer coach of Pine Grove Area. He unfortunately passed away from cancer. This year’s tournament teams were: Pine Grove Area, Pen Argyl, Wilson Area, and Shenandoah Valley. Pine Grove Area was the overall winner of the tournament.
Pine Grove Area’s first game was against Wilson Area. This was a very close game. In the first half Pine Grove was ahead by two. The goal scorers: Quinn Brommer and Nathan Frankenfield. They kept their lead for the whole first half. In the second half Wilson brought it back. A penalty was conceded and Wilson’s first goal was scored. Their next goal was scored off of a free kick outside the 18 yard box. The game went to double overtime. Pine Grove aAea seemed to be the dominant team in overtime, due to having more opportunities to score but couldn’t finish their chances. The game then went into penalties. The Cardinals won the penalty shootout 4-2. The overall score of the game ended 6-4 Pine Grove victory.
The final game of the tournament was between Pine Grove Area and Pen Argyl. Pine Grove Area dominated the majority of the game. Pen Argyl had a few chances but they were not dangerous enough to get past Pine Grove’s back line. The score ended 3-0, goal scorers being: Nathan Frankenfield, Tanner Kolb, and Dane Hannevig. This outcome led to the Pine Grove Area Cardinals winning the 2023 Wylie Tournament.
