A big controversy in the NFL right now is the pay that running backs are receiving is not enough. Some coaches and owners are saying that the position should be pulled out of the game. Players are threatening that they will stop practicing and miss games until they get the money they want. A running back is often not even chosen for the pro bowl in the NFL. The teams are paying their quarterback more and their running backs less. The new face of the football game is having the quarterback hold the ball more, make big throws, therefore less running plays. They want more running backs who can come out with fresh legs and reduce injuries, therefore they are giving them shorter contracts so they aren’t committed to them long term. This makes the pay for a seasoned running back equivalent to a rookie’s deal.
The running back position is definitely a dangerous and injury prone position. A running back will run through a defensive wall, and sacrifice their body for yardage. I would argue that makes them worth more money. Also, I would say that they bring fans to the seats. There is nothing more exciting than watching a running back who can juke and jive down the field blowing away all the big defenders trying to catch them. The athleticism of a running back makes them fun and exciting to watch. Think about being a little kid watching the NFL, and what did you love to see? Sure, the quarterbacks made amazing throws, but the running backs who could break away and score were so exciting. The pay currently being given to the running backs is disgustingly low. Something needs to be done to make this system fair again, and to prolong the existence of this position.
