Lifting Goal During the Off-Season

Evan Kerenda, junior, and Ty Drumheller, junior, share a hand shake as they prepare. The two of them are hyping each other up for squats.” Evan and I have been lifting together for awhile and always push each other to get better.” says Ty Drumheller.

Pine Grove Area Football team was 3-7 in the 2022 season and Coach David Shiffer is looking to prepare his team for the 2023 season. To make improvements, Shiffer is holding sessions in the weight room. There they will be working on strength training to prepare for a successful season. Shiffer is incorporating hip mobility and hip strengthening this year. He also added more explosive lifts, like landmine presses.

“Everyone is working harder in the weight room, but the numbers are less than last year due to more athletes competing in winter sports,” says Shiffer. There may not be many people in the weight room but the ones who are, are working hard.

Lane Lehman, junior, is the starting running back from the 2022 season. Lehman was named Team MVP the 2022 season.  He believes lifts are not only important to him but the team. ”It makes players all around more athletic and I think it teaches hard work and dedication,” says Lehman.

Brennden Etzweiler, a 2022 starter, at center. Etzweiler’s goal is to get faster and stronger. Another goal of his is to make the playoffs and the weight room can help with that. “ We have the team and coaches to do it. We just need to put it together and play as a team. If we do that we could surprise some people. We could make a run and get to a playoff game. That’s the goal,” says Etzweiler.

Many other players believe that the weight room will help them improve. Owen Hannevig, junior, says, “I would say that I need to improve on my strength and agility to be able to perform better on the field.”

Evan Karenda, junior, says, “ Yes, as far as becoming the best kicker and I can be goes, I’m looking to put on more mass. As far as becoming a better corner, I’m looking to become a faster, more agile player. The off-season workouts that Coach Shiffer provides the team help us become the best players we can be,” says Karenda.

Ty Drumheller, junior, says, “ I want to become as strong as possible as I can to prepare for next season. I don’t have set in stone number goals, I just want to push my body to the points of failure,” says Drumheller.
